definitely

August 16th and 23rd) and if you feel like booking in a group or joining one of
our adult

We're busy preparing all Centre equipment for the coming summer in between
making brief forays out onto the lake to teach the hardy souls turning up to
brave the
Arctic-style weather we're currently "enjoying".
All dates, times, costs, etc for 2010 are now up on the website.
If you can't find the information you're looking for, we're just a phone call or
an
email away.....

Heading towards the end of the busiest winter the Centre has ever had and
preparing
all Centre equipment for the coming summer.
All dates, times, costs, etc for 2009 are now up on the website.
New for this year we are offering the new BCU Foundation Safety and Rescue
course -- lots of fun falling out of a variety of kayaks and canoes and learning
how to
rescue others who've done the same thing.
A great course in its own right and a pre-requisite for anyone thinking of
heading onto
the BCU coaching scheme.
See here for
more details.

Just back from a weekend involving 1200 miles of driving, some excellent
paddling
and not coming first in a race.
One member of Southmere staff (who shall remain nameless -- he prefers it that
way)
was an entrant in the first ever Etive River Race on Scotland's classic
waterfall run,
the River Etive.
Three others decided the offer of a lift up to Scotland was too good to pass
over and
came along for some great paddling.
It rained and it rained and it rained....... to such an extent that the race was
moved from
the classic middle section to a much easier upper section, so instead of styling
down
waterfalls, the racers found themselves actually racing instead. Ah well......
A great weekend nonetheless.

Southmere provided the kayaking team and three-quarters of the sailing team
for
Greenwich Borough's entry in the inter-London borough youth sports event, the
London Youth Games. This prestigious olympics-style competition is one of the
largest youth sporting events in the world with over 20,000 young Londoners
taking
part in over 30 different sporting contests.
Both teams did exceptionally well and in fact, with the addition of the
Borough's rowing
team, Team Greenwich were outright winners of the regatta section of the Games
-- a
superb achievement.

Early in the morning a crack team of scuba divers (well, Liz, Laura and Giles
actually)
braved the icy depths of Southmere Lake to replace broken mooring buoys,
allowing
them to launch the sailing dinghies and usher in the start of the new summer
sailing
season.

Another successful trip paddling the rivers and falls of North Wales. Levels
were
rather low so Friday saw us paddling on the classic Middle Dee, always a good
fall-back option in low water conditions, while Saturday was spent learning how
to
negotiate steep drops and slides on Swallow Falls. Sunday was spent back on the
Dee before heading home in time for tea and medals.
All in all a great weekend.
See here for some pictures
of the trip.

The next Southmere white water kayaking trip leaves for North Wales tomorrow.
River levels are rather on the low side but doubtless some fun and games will be
had.
Pictures to follow.......

2005, 2006 and 2007 were the most successful years we've run in our entire
30 year plus history
and
2008 is shaping up to be even more of a success.
I have finally managed to update
the website and so dates and prices
should all be
correct for 2008 now, but if
they're wrong
I'm sure someone will tell
me!
If you try the
photogallery you should find some
pictures that will hopefully fill
you with the desire
to get out and give it a go on one of our many courses and
trips and
the rest of
the site has had a
good going over as well.
